baby, baby, baby oooh

Last weekend my sister Erin and I (+ mom) hosted a baby shower for our little sister, Jill.

Newsflash: Jill and Alex are having a baby and I am finally getting a local niece or nephew!!! Thanks guys.

As you may know, I love planning a party so I got to it early on… so early, that I may of leaked the big news to some of her friends accidentally. Busted.

* * *

First up, the invite: And because I truly believe in mailing out invites – I am including a sample of the envelope too. The invitees has custom address labels. Tip: I like to purchase somewhat-related stamps when sending invites!
Argyle-Baby-Shower Invite Argyle-Baby-Shower Invite2 Argyle-Baby-Shower Invite3Decor: I made a few banners for the party room and the front window. I bought some flowers and pulled out that springy table clothes. Easy! We also had some balloons and raindrop banners outside but again, I forgot to take a pictures. Tip: Buy a cute crib sheet (last photo) and use as a table covering – then give it to the mom when the party is over!Argyle-Baby-Shower BannersArgyle-Baby-Shower3Argyle-Baby-Shower6Argyle-Baby-Shower11Argyle-Baby-Shower13Argyle-Baby-Shower15Favours: This is when Pinterest makes you do things you don’t need to do… like favours for a baby shower. Simple but cute although Mike’s comment was that the popcorn has already popped and I should of filled the bags with kernels. Um, no – not pretty. Tip: Avoid Pinterest and ignore your husband. Argyle-Baby-Shower4 Argyle-Baby-Shower POPcardGames: Erin planned a few games – one being Trivia because Jill is a trivia nut. It’s a fun addition to a party and no one in my house was forced to smell diapers with random brown stuff in them. Tip: Have paper and pens ready to go so your games look legit.

The spread included chocolate and carrot cupcakes made by mom, lemon poppy seed loaf, homemade sprinkle fortune cookies, cheese and charcuterie boards, traditional devilled eggs, beet-pickled devilled eggs, a cheese ball with maple syrup, guacamole, artichoke dip, veggies, a baguette and skewers (feta + watermelon + mint) (bocconcini + tomato + basil) (an idea I got from another baby shower I attended). Tip: If you decided to make homemade sprinkle fortune cookies, be sure to let your guests know you put fortunes in them!Argyle-Baby-Shower1 Argyle-Baby-Shower2 Argyle-Baby-Shower7 Argyle-Baby-Shower8 Argyle-Baby-Shower9 Argyle-Baby-Shower10 Argyle-Baby-Shower14 Argyle-Baby-Shower16So that’s it. Another party over. I said I’d host 12 parties in 2016 and this is party #3. I have to step it up!

My apologies – I got so caught up in serving mimosas and catching up with all the lovely ladies that I didn’t take any pictures at the event BUT as a dedicated blogger / designer / party planner – I got lots of detail shots! Hah.

this ol house

Our house is almost 100 years old – built in the early 1920’s, shortly after the Halifax Explosion.

When we moved in eight years ago, the house had only one previous owner who had recently passed away. The family freshened up the house for selling by pulling out all of the dated pieces and restoring the original details which gave the home its character. I have no shame is saying they did exactly what they needed to do to convince a gal like me the house was absolutely perfect… And for a few good months, I kept that thought.

Don’t get me wrong, I have always loved this house and the neighbourhood, but I quickly found faults: No closets, small bedrooms, no open space, darkness, rot, dampness, etc. and by the time David was born, less than two years later, Mike and his Dad tore off and rebuilt the back mud room that was rotting. Next up, the bathroom! And after spending a few weeks in a house without a full bathroom and an eight-month-old baby, we realized we were the type of people who could conquer any renovation thrown at us!

Why not rip apart the entire main floor, dig out a basement, and replace all the windows? Hire a contractor from hell and go wild! Who needs a kitchen when you have a retro toaster oven and a bathtub? We lived upstairs above all of the dust and chaos for seven months when David was three. It was nuts but worth it when all was said and done.

Since then, we’ve scaled back on renovations but have done some landscaping and updates to David’s room and our bedroom room.

Now that it has been over four years things are starting to need a little TLC.

I read about the idea of creating a WHOLE HOUSE TO DO LIST on Young House Love and thought it’d be fun to write one for our home.

So here is the list. Some big. Some small. Some that will happen. Some that likely won’t:

Main Floor:

  • Paint the stairs (they’re chipping) and add a runner (not sure if they will stay purple)
  • Wallpaper the powder room
  • Repaint the hallway
  • Paint the playroom – keep it as a playroom or make it an office?
  • Replace the broken TV unit
  • Build built-in shelving for the playroom
  • Replace the broken pane of glass on the french door
  • Replace the coat rack in the front room with wall hooks
  • Fix the under cabinet lightening in the kitchen
  • Paint the bathroom door deep navy?
  • Replace the rug in the living room
  • Replace the hallway rug
  • Replace the coffee table – move coffee table to basement
  • Add more pictures to the gallery wall
  • Fix the clutter problem with the closet under the staircase and add lighting
  • Mount the TV or fix it so it looks like it is not supposed to be mounted

Basement:

  • Finish building the laundry room
  • Paint the stairs
  • Paint the railing
  • Mount the TRX
  • Buy a deep freeze
  • Build shelving for the old basement storage
  • Declutter!
  • Move the washer and dryer out of the new basement and into the laundry room that needs to be finished
  • Add baseboards and repaint the new basement
  • Install the Flor floor tile carpet we have
  • Furnish the basement so it’s an awesome rec. room

Second Level:

  • Fix the cracks in the walls… plaster woes
  • Paint the bathroom
  • Fix the window trim in the bathroom
  • Replace the bathroom mirror
  • Replace the current hallway linen cupboard with a floor to ceiling closet (but account for the attic opening)
  • Figure out a plan for upstairs…
    A. Move the office down to the current playroom and make the current office a closet. This will give us a proper guest room.
    B. Move the office to the current closet/guest room and bust out the wall between the current office and our bedroom to make a bigger bedroom with a closet.
    C. Move David’s to our current room, keep the office where it is and bust out the wall between the current closet/guest room and David’s room to make a big master bedroom with a closet.
    D. RENOVATE: Build out on top of the flat roof to make a big master bedroom with a closet and ensuite that wraps around David’s room. Move the window in David’s room to accommodate this. Keep the office where it is and make our current bedroom the guest room.

Outside:

  • Get a swing for the front porch
  • Hang the mailbox
  • Stain the decks
  • Get a hanging flower basket for the side entry
  • Move the vegetable garden
  • Get a new outdoor dining set
  • Install a lap pool
  • Add outdoor lighting to the shed
  • Add tall grass to the back of the backyard
  • Get a new BBQ
  • Get a mechanical shade awning in the backyard
  • Finish sealing the patio stones

I know, it seems like a lot of stuff right? But I think it’s smart to write it all down so we can keep track of our goals and priorities. We probably won’t get a lap pool but it doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of our wish list!

Do any of you have a crazy list like this or is it too overwhelming to write down? Let me know!

when the moon hits your eye

… like a big pizza pie that’s amore.

I’ve been talking about starting up Friday Night Pizza Night for a long time but here’s the thing, it’s complicated! In the fall, David had swimming at 6pm every Friday night so it couldn’t happen but now that it is a new year, his lessons are on Mondays, it’s too cold to go out and too dark to roam the streets, I think the timing is perfect to start this up:

FNPN

Here’s the complicated part… I’d like to say every Friday is Friday Night Pizza Night but it won’t be… If Wentworth has snow, we’ll likely be booking it to my parent’s in Pugwash on Friday nights (like this week) so I need some kind of alert letting people know if it’s happening. At the same time, I am not about to spend my week organizing and inviting people because that’s effort and Friday Night Pizza Night is supposed to be spontaneous. And speaking of that, it’s easy to say ‘everyone, come on over for Friday Night Pizza Night (whoever, whenever, as long as it’s a Friday night) but that could get tricky too…

What if no one comes and I waisted 3 hours cleaning the house for no one?
What if 30 people plus their children come and I spend all Saturday cleaning up the aftermath?

See, complicated?

Also, I am a bit of an Emily Post junkie. I hate the thought of inviting people over and making them bring stuff but at the same time, I can’t buy eight bricks of cheese in anticipation. Plus, newsflash, I do not have a huge pizza over in my kitchen so I may need to test the waters in regards to interest and attendance.

So with all this being said, here’s the plan. I hope you like it. It may change.

  • Friday Night Pizza Night. If you are interested, let me know and send me your phone number (if I don’t already have it) and if it’s a go ahead, I will send a text out on the Wednesday. If you and your family can come, send me a private text back letting me know. Of course, no pressure to come every time, only when you want to. Simple, right?
  • Bring a ‘ready-to-pop-in-the-oven pizza. It can be homemade or a McCain Rising Crust 4 Cheese Pizza… I don’t care, we don’t judge. Or, if you want to show off your mad dough rolling skillz, bring all the ingredients with you and make it on site.*
  • We will keep the fridge stocked with juice boxes for the kids but if you want beer, wine or pop bring that too. No need to bring stuff for others and no need to share but I’ll have a few munchies to snack on in case the oven line up is long. With that being said, if you are dying to share a new recipe with others, by all means, we love a sharer. Especially if said sharer is a chef.
  • Friday Night Pizza Night will start at 6:00 pm. Kids are welcome but make sure they have something to eat too. Also, make sure they are house-trained. Just kidding… kind of. Seriously, I am locking the lego cabinet and putting the puzzles and games up high but will have a movie playing – they’re welcome.

Perhaps when winter is over, we can relocate to the Park Avenue Community Oven but I am not sure on their schedule (I will ask)(Jeff?)(Sarah?).

I hope this interests local friends. It’s hard seeing each other, especially when there are kids and busy schedules to juggle, but it is important to make an effort. So let me know and I will let you know. Hopefully we can make this happen once, or twice a month. That’d be awesome.

Feel free to offer any insight!

*Our kitchen is not nut-free, vegan or kosher. Please keep that in mind.

You say you want a resolution

I hope everyone is feeling good this morning. Happy New Year. Happy 2015!

2014 was great awesome but it’s now 2015 and despite it being an uneven number, I am optimistic… True to form, why not start the year with some resolutions because that’s what we do, right?

First, lets review how I did in 2014. The full post is here, but I’ll recap…

  • Don’t say JUST. (Yes, I worked on this and even corrected other when they did it to themselves because everyone loves a know it all)
  • Exercise. (Yes, I still go to Cyclone twice a week and run almost daily. I did a few half marathons, joined a Cabot Trail Relay team, won a women’s 10km race and finished a marathon)
  • Keep busy. (For the most part, yes. 2014 was the most challenging freelance year, and I am still struggling, but I kept up with blogging despite what often feels like lack of interest/readership)
  • Eat good, cook good. (see 2015)
  • See friends. (Better, but not great… We are trying to host more, I started a book club and have barre class date nights)
  • Dates with David/Mike. (Yes)
  • Embrace winter (Yes, we skated at the Oval and I bought skis! Now, if only we can get some snow I can actually ski!!!)
  • Travel. We must visit our family in England so I am adding this to my list of resolutions. (England, YES! Belgium, YES! New England, YES! Montreal, YES!)
  • Drink more water. (Yes, see)
  • Touch base. Friends, family. Pizza Fridays should start up for real this time. (see 2015)

I also had a bonus… about giving stuff up. I choose FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS. Hum? I dropped the ball on this one. I thought I gave up potato chips, which for the most part I avoided, but I do not recall writing this. I don’t eat much fast food but I know I discovered the A&W veggie burger in 2014. I also went to Quiznos. Probably Harvey’s… and ordered the veg sandwich from Salvatore’s A LOT! My bad.

IMG_1885

So what do I want for 2015? I came up with an idea at the eleventh hour. Rather than eliminate something and/or commit to something for a full year (because that is a long time), why not eliminate and add something each month. For example, this is what I came up with quickly:

January: Eliminate: French fries. Commit: 3 minutes of plank daily.
February: Eliminate: Chocolate. Commit: Send 3 letters a week.

I think this could be fun plus my 10-UP Resolution List for 2015 is:

  1. Exercise: Train for another half or full marathon?? Try new classes??
  2. Join a group: Right now I am thinking of joining Centre for Women in Business. Anyone want to join with me?
  3. Cook more / experiment more. We are in a food rut so I got this book for Mike. I am also going to get back into writing out a meal planning calendar. It works for us when we actually stick to it.
  4. Pizza nights will start! Details to come.
  5. Keep up with the blogging. Or quit blogging. Figure out if this is all worth it.
  6. Travel. Family fun in the sun. Maybe a ski trip?
  7. Swim. Haha I say this but am already doubtful.
  8. Cut back on online shopping / impulsive spending. Paypal is not always a pal.
  9. Read more decent stuff, less facebooking and way less iPhoning.
  10. Have a plan… make plans. Stay on top of things, stay on top of seeing friends. Go places. Always have a training plan. If they don’t call you. Call them. If they don’t make plans, make them yourself!

So that’s it. I wish you all a happy and healthy new year. May 2015 be full of fun and great adventures. Thanks for reading along and if I do decide to keep this going, thanks for your support.

the September issue

September is wrapping up and I need a game plan. For reals. Although I rarely take time off in the summer, there is something about warm weather and flip flops that allows me to slack off a bit. But now I need a good kick in the butt to change things up, get things done, get new projects and actually be busy. When I am busy, I am happy and that’s my key to surviving winter.

Those of you who work 9-5’s with pensions and vacation time may not get it but, with all of the perks to being self-employed, working from home with a golden retriever under the desk can still be stressful at times. Work does not always land on your plate, you have to fight, you have to beg, you have to lower your expectations, you have to question yourself, you have to do things you don’t want to do and you have to do things you hate doing.

I know, everyone who works likely has things about their job they hate doing. This weekend I attended a reading by Elaine Lui (laineygossips.com) at Word On The Street. (I have been following her blog for over nine years… actually, I’ve been reading her blog longer than I’ve known what a blog was. True, I love the gossip but I think what actually draws me there is her writing, her ambition and her way of staying classy despite the reputation one may have about being a gossiper.) At the end of Lui’s reading there was a Q&A and someone asked her who were the worst celebrities she’s interviewed. Her response was that most are terrible; celebrities put themselves on pedestals and they often think they’re better than everyone else. But in all honesty, if they don’t promote themselves or sell themselves to the media and public, then they are more likely to fail. Interviews and promotion are a part of their job so even though they hate it, they still need to do it, and they should do it well.

What do I hate? I hate asking for help. I hate knowing what I want, but not sure how to get it. I hate putting myself out there and wondering if it matters. I hate questioning all of this. I hate wondering if I should just find a job in an office with vacation time and a pension but no dog even though I know I really don’t want to find a job in an office with vacation time and a pension.

I think the key to success is pushing yourself rather than expecting other’s to do it for you … So I am going to work on that first. Although no one is paying me to write this… I will still make an effort. Although I don’t need to make a homemade Holiday Card, I will still spend too much time thinking about a fresh new idea. I will make 20 calendars and a big batch of marmalade to give out. Why bother? Why send mail when you can email? Because you have to do what you love doing as much as you have to do what you hate doing. And if you mix em up then maybe the bad won’t be so bad and the good will be even gooder. Amiright?

So with all this and that. Here’s my fall to-do list. The summer wrap-up post is coming next week because in my mind, summer is not over ’till my toes are numb.

  • Polish up the website portfolio
  • Update the CV and cover letter
  • Make David’s halloween costume
  • Design the 2015 desk calendars
  • Mail birthday cards to all of my nieces and nephews… even the ones that have already happened… because late is better than never
  • Plan more lunch dates
  • Road trip
  • Buy a 2014-2015 office-wear cardigan (Here is last year’s)
  • Cook more
  • Bake more
  • Watch Pitch Perfect (I can’t believe I still haven’t watched this movie!)
  • Design and mail the 2014 holiday cards
  • Network
  • Learn how to network
  • Read more magazines
  • Run a marathon (I registered!!!)
  • Take more pictures with the nice camera
  • Make marmalade
  • Go on a spa date
  • Walk in the park at least once a week
  • Ride my bike more
  • Plan meals
  • Plant some bulbs
  • Go swimming in a pool
  • Finish my push-up challenge
  • Listen to the radio more
  • Stay in a hotel
  • Start weekly dinner parties
  • Get some fun new projects or find an amazing new job

How about you? Any fresh ideas or plans? (Please tell me I am not the only one struggling in September.) IMG_1338
