5 things

Hey, it’s Monday and I’m checking in with 5 things…

  1. Hello Sunshine got a little update at the end of last week. I thought it would be fun to lighten things up. Now if only I took the time to work on my website. Womp womp.

  2. The search for an awesome hoodie is over. Mission accomplished! I got this on sale and have worn it almost every day. And then last week for work, I got paid to spend a bit of time online researching New York Fashion week and what’s trending and it turns out hoodies are trending for Fall 2016 so I’m ahead of the game.

  3. I’m about to be an auntie again… any day now… so I’m somewhat distracted and have deactivated my do not disturb feature on my phone. I also appreciate that the baby is arriving in July because, as a lover of patterns and good planning, it now means I will have niece or nephew born in JULY. Sam is August, Celeste is September, Joel is October, Margaret is November and Evan is December. Thanks family!

  4. Marathon training has started and I’m following a legit program this time. Lets see how it goes… a lot more miles (eek). I also just realized we will be in NYC the weekend before the election and flying home on election day so depending on the outcome, there may be a mad dash to the airport.

  5. 100 days of Summer is well-underway and I am pleased to report that I have completed 30 items so far. Others are in progress and I am feeling pretty good. Let me know how your summer bucket lists are coming along?

That’s all five. I hear we are getting back the sun and heat tomorrow which is great because I’m not allowed to use the dryer this summer. Laundry is piling up and the indoor rack is maxed out.

5 things

I’m tired. Too tired to recap the Eco-Challenge so here’s a little update on other business to hold you over. It’s been a while since I’ve done a five things report.

  1. $30 later, I am blending! (way cheaper than a Vitamix) A few weeks ago I mentioned my blender woes and asked for some shopping advice. Thanks for all of your recommendations! In the end, Cameron, Malcolm and Erin saved the day by convincing me to search for parts for my Breville. Well it wasn’t easy – she’s been discontinued for years – but, I found a part and voila! I am making smoothies again baby!

  2. Speaking of Erin… Congratulations! She sent me a letter (snail mail style) all they way from Cole Harbour and has won some stationery treats!

  3. Jill sent my Uuni love story to Uuni and I made their Facebook page. The love is mutual! #swoon.

  4. Who’s still planking? Day 68. I am not going to lie – I forgot to plank two times. The first time I actually woke up at 3:00am in a semi-induced panic-attack because I forgot to plank. I almost jumped out of bed to plank and then realized the time. It was too late. A new day. Doomed. On a side note, I did not miss one single day of running until yesterday! I walked 20 hours straight and was too tired to run so that’s it. Steak over. I’m okay with ending it – May is quite active with the Eco-Challenge, Bluenose half marathon and a 3:45 am leg start at the Cabot Trail Relay so I think I need to take rest days more seriously.

  5. I have baby names on my mind (nope, not pregnant!)… When I saw this tweet I puked a little in my mouth. Really? This can’t be real. I will talk more about the name game later. Like wearing PJs in public, I am a total unauthorized judgy snob about names.

That’s all. It’s Monday. Damnnnn

Have a good one!

5 things

I haven’t written a 5 Things post in a long time. Why not? 5 Things going on these days…

  1. David had a big week – the Halifax Hurricanes came to his school and he made the front page of the Halifax Citizen (kind of – thanks Lindsay!). Click here. He also got new glasses (note: if you don’t want your child to choose the camouflage glasses, don’t let him see them… once he had, nothing could change his mind).IMG_4874 IMG_4890
  2. Those who know me, know I love Kraft Dinner. Call is nostalgia… or just call it what it is, deliciously good. I came across this recipe for homemade “boxed” mac & cheese and had to give it a try. Guys, it is actually good and took the same amount of time as the boxed! I used GoGo Quinoa Macaroni from Costco, which my friend Nancy introduced me to. Next time I am going to try it will regular macaroni so I can see how if really is as good as the real deal. Want the recipe? Click here

  3. Mike and I are six months short of our tenth anniversary, which means it’s the period in your marriage when all the stuff you got as wedding gifts start to break (blender and backup blender in one week!) Not great timing since I challenged myself to a smoothie-a-day in February.IMG_4796
  4. David and I signed up for the Bluenose. He’s doing the 4km run for his 4th time and I am running the half marathon. PSA: the price goes up on March 1st. Anyone else running the half? It will be my fifth time (or more?). I am also looking at fall marathon ideas… I’ll keep you posted. PS. I am selling an old Garmin. Interested?

  5. So the old saying “The grass is always greener…” is true! I had to make a ‘quick’ business call to California for a quote and ended up on the phone with the owner for 4o minutes. Turns out Nova Scotia and the Celtic Colours is at the top of his travel bucket list. He lives 40 minutes south of Lake Tahoe. Obviously I blabbed about my love for his state and all the places I’ve been. He was impressed. He also appreciated all the tourist tips for the East Coast. Why did we not discuss a house-swap?

Bonus. Here is a download to some fun Oscar Bingo Cards. Not to gloat, but I’ve watched 4 more movies since my last update (including MUSTANG!)Oscar Noms 2016 copy

That’s all! Have a great week.IMG_4895 IMG_4896 IMG_4897 IMG_4898 IMG_4899psst. If you like what you’re reading, please subscribe and share. xomeg

5 things

Hi friends! I am back from March Break and true to its name, I took a break from work, blogging and Nova Scotia… but not winter. I thought I’d catch up with 5 things on a Monday!

IMG_21841. Not gonna lie, I am loving skiing! We went to Sunday River for the week with our neighbours. If you have any interest in skiing, this is a great way to spend a week. The kids joined a week-long camp and were dropped off at 9:30 am – they skied all day, were fed, had a blast and we picked them up at 3:00 pm and skied home. Amazing. Do it and teach them while they’re young-fearless-dare-devils.

Unknown2. Wanted: A treadmill currently being used as your clothes rack. No joke, this weather is nasty and there has been a lot of complaining from drivers about runners on the roads. I have signed up for the Bluenose half marathon and the Cabot Trail Relay and I am itching to get out there so for now, maybe I should suck it up and run inside. Help!

FB Wallpaper-013. Forever Young book club meets this week. Spoiler alert: I really loved this month’s book.

IMG_20764. I am working through my 36 THINGS TO DO BEFORE I TURN 36 list and it’s a slow start. I have 5.5 items done so far (won’t tell you which ones) but I am sad to say I know not all thirty-six items will be completed because they closed the Oval. Boo. My friend suggested I change that one to “Try Boarder Cross” and check it off as DONE.

FNPN5. And finally, lets talk about Friday on a Monday. So I’ve kind of slacked off on Friday Night Pizza Night and not because of the company or commitment. I was a bit overwhelmed by how it should work and now that I have given the event a bit of distance, I think I have the best plan yet!

Attempt 1: Everyone brought their own pizza (either homemade and ready-to-bake, ordered or frozen and we we ate together but independently. The idea was simple but it didn’t feel very communal and in the end, it seemed more chaotic than anticipated. too many pizzas and not enough mouths.

Attempt 2: Mike and I pre-made homemade frozen pizzas with sauce and cheese and everyone brought stuff to share and decorate. This worked great because the pizzas were small and several fit in the oven at once. It felt much better but there were only 8 adults so even though there was a night of prep-work ahead of time, it wasn’t too difficult to make and freeze the pizzas.

As much as I prefer attempt 2 over attempt one, it is expensive and time consuming plus there is a lot of planning. We do not have a deep freeze so it’s hard to know how many pizzas to prepare and then have a place to store them. I wanted attempt 2 to work but at the same time, it felt as though the spontaneity and ease of FNPN was lost in all of the planning and work.

Enter attempt 3: Everyone brings their own cheese pizza – it can be a homemade one (like we make [see recipe below]), or a store-bought pizza and we will have a topping bar. You know, like a salad bar! The toppings won’t always be the same, but that’s where the spontaneity kicks in, plus, it seems like it’d be easier for us to provide all of the toppings so there is not too much of one thing and not enough of another. And by bringing your own base(s), you can eat as much as you have.

I hope the new plan sounds enticing. To make homemade frozen pizzas – which are easy and great to make ahead of time for any pizza night – simply roll out your dough and bake it for 5 minutes max (just till it is dry). IMG_1990 Once the dough has cooled down, spread the sauce and add cheese. Cover each pizza with saran wrap and tinfoil. Freeze. When ready to decorate, take out of the freezer! IMG_1989

I hope to see you at the next FNPN! More details to come. I promise.

5 things

  1. The results are in and writing about life, family, friends and David sparks the most interest. Thanks for participating. Poll
  2. Speaking of David, we’ve been having fun with his new eye patches. Thanks Anna for the inspirational linkIMG_1899Patch
  3. The Magical Mystical Mountain Destroyers have officially registered for the Storm the Mountain eco-challenge. I am sure it is going to be amazing. Mackenzie, who’s nine, is gonna knock the snowshoes off everyone! MMMD
  4. Booked. We’ve decided to spend more on travel and less on stuff… Making memories. Our first March Break with a school-aged kid will be a ski week with our neighbours at Sunday River. Swish swish. IMG_1946
  5. The first FNPN was held and despite a broken window it was fun! That being said, I am changing the plan… Rather than having everyone bring their own pizza, I am going to make homemade frozen individual pizzas. People can bring their drinks and toppings to share. We’ll set-up a DIY make and bake station. This should cut back on wasted food and make it feel more communal I found this recipe online. I guess I need to make some of these before I call the next FNPN.5147933b74c5b60d0a0015d5._w.540_s.fit_FNPN
